Cabinet painting or replacement: where to start
A different cabinet color can transform the feeling of a kitchen. It cannot change where the sink sits or create storage that is not there. Before choosing between painting and replacement, separate the appearance you want from the practical problems you need to solve.

A different cabinet color can transform the feeling of a kitchen. It cannot change where the sink sits or create storage that is not there. Before choosing between painting and replacement, separate the appearance you want from the practical problems you need to solve.
Ask whether the layout works
Think about cooking, storage and movement through the room. If you like the arrangement and want a different look, a finish change may be worth exploring. If the cabinets are awkwardly arranged or important storage is missing, write those concerns down first. It is frustrating to complete a cosmetic project and discover that the reason you disliked the kitchen is still there.
Have the existing cabinetry assessed
Cabinet material, condition and the existing coating influence the available options. Identify damage, loose components and areas where the finish is failing. Do not assume every surface can receive the same preparation or product. An assessment should distinguish what a coating can change from work that needs repair, replacement or another specialist. The aim is to choose the right project, not to force every kitchen into one approach.
Compare complete scopes
For a painting proposal, count doors, drawers, visible frames, end panels and trim. Ask whether interiors are included and how hardware changes are handled. For a replacement proposal, make sure the associated removal, installation and surrounding work are clear. A low total is not a useful comparison when the proposals solve different problems. Compare the scope and the intended result before making a decision based on price.

Think through the finish and the preparation
A kitchen finish must be considered alongside its existing surface. Benjamin Moore’s cabinet guidance includes cleaning, preparation, priming and time for the coating to develop its finish. Discuss the system recommended for your cabinets rather than choosing a product by color alone. Ask what appearance is realistic for visible grain and existing imperfections. The goal should be clear before work begins.
Plan the practical disruption
Ask what parts of the kitchen will be available, where work will happen and what needs to be emptied or moved. Discuss the sequence for doors, drawers and hardware. Drying and curing are not interchangeable terms, so request care guidance for the actual product. Avoid organizing a gathering or other kitchen-dependent activity around an assumed return-to-use time that nobody has confirmed.
Choose the project that fits the goal
Use the consultation to connect the desired look, cabinet condition, layout and budget. If painting fits those needs, record the included surfaces, finish choices and care instructions. If replacement or repair is the better answer for part of the kitchen, resolve that scope first. A successful refresh is one that addresses the reason you wanted the change, not simply the option with the most attractive before-and-after image.
Planning checklist
- Do I like the current layout and storage?
- Are the cabinets suitable for a finish change?
- Do both estimates include the complete work?
- What access and care requirements should I plan for?
