01 / Choose the finish for the deck you have.

More life outdoors.

Before deciding on a color, consider how the deck is used, its exposure and the condition of its current coating. A transparent look and a solid painted finish are different choices. The estimate is the place to clarify the suitable options and the preparation each needs.

What it covers: Deck staining and painting; weather-resistant finishes; make the deck look like new.

01

Wood & existing finish

Tell us what you know about previous stain or paint and when it was applied. Highlight worn boards, peeling areas or any repairs you are already planning.

02

Boards, rails & steps

Define which surfaces need attention. Decking, railings, posts and stairs should be discussed explicitly so the scope reflects the whole project.

03

Drying & return to use

Ask how weather and drying conditions affect the schedule, and when furniture and foot traffic can return after the chosen finish is applied.

02 / Plan it properly

Start with the wood. Then choose the look.

01Work out what is already on the deck

A deck that has a worn transparent stain presents a different decision from one with an opaque coating. If you know the previous product or have an old container, share that information.

If you do not, say so. The existing finish, surface condition and intended result need to be considered together before agreeing preparation. A color photograph alone rarely answers all of those questions.

02Be clear about how much grain you want to see

Stains are offered in different opacities. A more transparent appearance shows more of the underlying wood; a more opaque finish changes how much of that character remains visible.

The same color name can look different on different wood and with different opacity. Consider a sample on the actual material when appropriate, and ask how your current coating affects the options. Do not choose solely from an online image.

03Separate coating work from repairs

Walk the deck and identify boards, rails or steps you are concerned about. A stain or paint application is a finish, not a substitute for a repair.

Clarify whether any carpentry is needed, who will handle it and how it affects the project sequence. Include all the surfaces you want considered: horizontal decking, posts, rails, steps and any other visible components may require separate decisions.

04Leave room for drying and a practical handover

Outdoor work depends on the surface and the conditions. Ask how cleaning, drying and the chosen coating influence the sequence, and when you can bring furniture back or use the deck normally.

Keep the product and color record for future maintenance. During the final review, check the agreed surfaces together so that any touch-up discussion is tied to the original scope.

The right conversation starts with your home.
Should I stain or paint my deck?

The right choice depends on the wood, the existing finish and the appearance you want. Stain and paint offer different looks, and switching between them can change preparation needs. Discuss the current surface before choosing.

Does the estimate include deck repairs?

Ask for any needed repairs to be assessed and specifically included or excluded. A coating does not fix structural damage, and the painting scope should not be treated as an agreement for replacement boards or carpentry.

Can deck work be discussed with exterior painting?

Yes. Tell us about both when requesting a quote so the house exterior and deck can be considered in the same project conversation.

Which areas do you serve?

Charleston, Mount Pleasant, Isle of Palms, Sullivan’s Island, Daniel Island, James Island, West Ashley, North Charleston, Goose Creek and Summerville. Share your project address with Greg to confirm service availability.
